It’s Saturday, it’s payday, it’s party time! Girlies get your frocks and glitter on and boys polish up those crayzeee dance moves, it’s time to enter the wonderful world of Buttoned Down Disco…
Arriving early to take full advantage of the various promotions this travelling club night has in store for its lucky inhabitants tonight, I follow the bubbles round the corner from Mornington Crescent tube to the entrance of KOKO (formerly known as Camden Palace). Considering the fact that this club night is exclusively mailing list invite only there’s a mother of a queue forming outside. No need to dirty those vintage Fruit of the Loom’s though, the waiting time is surprisingly minimal. Once inside this vast venue it’s quickly apparent that the crowd tonight are an interesting mix. Ladies with their peroxide bobs and blood red lips flexing the electro-vintage look alongside pretty boys, indie kids and even the odd punk are amongst tonight’s plethora of ingredients. I head to one of the upstairs bars to sample some of the special offers, which I might add, generously run from 9pm opening time until 1am. Selected beers, chasers and shots of Pernod are priced at a manageable £1.50 for the happy four hours! KOKO, if a little large for such a modest opening time, is one of those venues you instantly warm to. Even at the very beginning of the evening when the place is slightly sparse there’s plenty of seating room in which to relax and have a drink before it starts to get busy. I do so and then wander over to one of the balconies to contemplate the huge dance floor which will become the victim of much drunken silliness as the evening progresses. Dollyrocker (BDD’s travelling DJ) starts the night off with some classic and not so well-known indie type offerings. This is fitting for the beginning of the evening while people are getting their bearings and it eases us comfortably into the night. As the evening progresses all manner of tunes can be heard. Dollyrocker has been quoted as saying that the club night is unique in its complete “disregard [for] musical genres”. You can expect to hear a trashed-up kitsched-up mash-up of indie, punk, electro, funk, eclectic pop and disco with some left-field pop and quirky covers thrown in for good measure. The crowd are a friendly bunch and the sentiment of the evening seems to be that of the pursuit of pure party pleasure. It’s not unlike a school disco except with a more mature but still fun loving crowd. At one point during the evening some giant blow-up balls are released onto the dance floor with people batting them back and forth like a school playground game. This night is one to be experienced, so what are you waiting for? Get your names on the mailing list and skip down to the next secret venue for some good wholesome fun. Go on, take a bite!
